Case report: absence of the right piriformis muscle in a woman

2018

We report a very rare case of a unilaterally absent piriformis muscle in a 60 year old woman. Accompanying variations comprised a common gluteal artery (instead of two distinct superior and inferior gluteal arteries), and an absent gemellus inferior muscle. The contralateral left side showed a normally developed piriformis muscle. In hominoids, the piriformis is constant, but is regularly missing in several other vertebrates. The piriformis muscle is an anatomical landmark for ultrasound investigations and ultrasound-guided interventions in the deep gluteal region such as a superior gluteal nerve block or even a sacral plexus block, also for any surgical approach such as total hip arthropla…

Comparison of the diagnostic efficacy of 2D radiography and cone beam computed tomography in persistent apical periodontal disease: A PRISMA-DTA syst…

2021

Objective The objective of this study was to answer the question: Do conventional radiographs (periapical/panoramic) afford better diagnostic outcomes than cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as a complement for clinical diagnosis of apical lesions with persistent apical periodontitis or disease after root canal treatment? Study Design Five electronic databases were searched and provided information to enable construction of a table to determine primary diagnostic measures and secondary parameters. The evidence was appraised with the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies tool and GRADEpro software. Results Twenty-seven articles (9903 diagnostic images) were included. The pooled…

2021

This article describes a proposed protocol for the histologic diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma developed for the National Cutaneous Melanoma Registry managed by the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV). Following a review of the literature, 36 variables relating to primary tumors, sentinel lymph nodes, and lymph node dissection were evaluated using the modified Delphi method by a panel of 8 specialists (including 7 pathologists). Consensus was reached on the 30 variables that should be included in all pathology reports for cutaneous melanoma and submitted to the Melanoma Registry. This list can also serve as a model to guide routine reporting in pathology departments.

Mafia and psychopathy

2014

Background In popular culture, Mafia members are often portrayed as ruthless, callous and remorseless, but there is no empirical research on their personality traits. Aims The goal of this research was to examine levels of psychopathic traits among Mafia members who have been convicted of a criminal offence. Methods The Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) rated 30 Italian adult male prisoners who had been convicted for Mafia-related crimes (86% resident in one 6-month period) and 39 next adjacent convicted men who were not enrolled in any criminal organisation. Results Mafia members obtained lower PCL-R total scores, interpersonal and affective (PCL-R factor 1) scores and lifestyle scores…

Official and Self-Reported Childhood Abuse and Adult Crime of Young Offenders

2004

This study sought to predict adult criminal behavior in a sample of 89 young male prison inmates using self-reported and official data on childhood maltreatment (gathered from interviews and files) and criminality (collected using a 33-item Self-Reported Criminality Scale and official criminal records). Overall, the offenders convicted of violent versus nonviolent crimes did not differ in self-reported criminality. File-based neglect was predictive of self-reported property offenses, and self-reported psychological abuse predicted self-reported vandalism. Official criminal record data was not predicted by self-reported or file-based childhood maltreatment. The findings provided evidence of…

Concepts for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease: molecular mechanisms and clinical application

2005

To date, various strategies have been developed in order to prevent or to slow down the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Despite the medical need for an effective therapeutic treatment of AD, progress towards this goal is painstakingly slow. Although AD is the most common neurodegenerative disorder and a large amount of primary basic and clinical research has been performed already, it appears very difficult to identify appropriate targets, which would promise fast, effective and safe strategies to combat the disease onset and progression. In this review, we present some of clinically applied treatment options, which may improve AD symptoms for a short period but so far lack the abi…

Expression of different isoforms of nitric oxide synthase in experimentally denervated and reinnervated skeletal muscle.

1997

Denervated muscle fibers express enhanced levels of stress and apoptosis-associated proteins and undergo apoptosis. In experimentally denervated and reinnervated rat facial muscle, we now evaluate changes in the expression patterns of different isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-generating nitric oxide (NO), which mediates oxidative stress and apoptosis. Physiological expression of NOS corresponds to a constant sarcolemmal staining pattern for neuronal NOS (nNOS) and a patchy sarcolemmal and weak sarcoplasmic labeling for the endothelial NOS-isoform, with no expression for inducible NOS (iNOS). Denervated muscle displayed distinct downregulation of nNOS with preserved expression of dys…

Evaluation of interface pressure and temperature management in five wheelchair seat cushions and their effects on user satisfaction

2020

Abstract Background Factors such as the manufacturing materials, shape or even the mechanical and thermal response of sitting Pressure Redistribution Support Surfaces (PRSS) can be potential contributors to pressure ulcers. However, few studies have compared a number of characteristics of the most frequently used devices. Objective To compare three potential contributors to pressure ulcers in five commercial PRSS: pressure redistribution, temperature and perceived comfort. Method: Study with a cross-over randomized design in healthy volunteer participants. Data was collected in a temperature and relative humidity controlled environment. To assess thermal response, the temperature (Flir-E60)…
